Anita James, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Chesapeake Public Schools lives in Chesapeake. She has a B.A. in Elementary Education, Ed. Specialist, M.A. as an Education Specialist and a Ph.D. in Urban Education and Administration. Dr. James has been an elementary teacher, a principal, director of childcare center, a committee member for Smart Beginnings, Square One and the Chesapeake Youth Commission, the chair of the Chesapeake Ready-to-Read coalition. She is currently the chair of Christian Education Ministry and a Sunday school teacher at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church. Her favorite children’s book is Peter Rabbit, by Beatrix Potter and The Monster Who Ate My Peas, by D. Schnitzlein. Her best memories from kindergarten are singing, reciting nursery rhymes, using the blunt scissors and gluing projects.
Her vision for Minus 9 to 5:
“I believe that this endeavor will move our community towards equity for young children and their families. Knowledge is power and the Minus 9 to 5 initiative will provide parents with information and skills to prepare their children for success in their educational experiences and beyond.”
